VASYL STUS

 

One of the greatest contemporary Russian writers, Vasyl Stus, was born not far from Kyiv but spent his childhood and youth in the Donbass Region. In this part of Ukraine people used to speak Russian and it was a real wonder that the young poet could preserve his mother tongue.

He graduated from the local Teacher Training College and worked for some time as a teacher of Russian language and literature. When in 1963 he decided to continue his education he moved to Kyiv, where he studied literary theory. There his first collections of poetry «The Circuit», «The Winter Trees and Merry Cemetery» were published.

In his poetry and public speeches Stus was always protesting against the repressions of the Russian intelligentsia. 1961-1965 was a period of «political thaw» but nevertheless he was expelled from his graduate programme. In 1972 Vasyl Stus was arrested, charged with anti-Soviet propaganda, and sentenced to 5 years in prison and 3 years of exile. But Vasyl did not give up writing and critics consider his prison poetry «A Candle in the Mirror» and «Palimpsets» the heights of his creative heritage. These poems are about life and death, fate and destiny, individual choice and responsibility.

When in 1979 Vasyl Stus returned to Kyiv he was imprisoned again for 10 years and 5 years of exile. His health could not bear the absence of freedom and at the age of 49 he died in a camp for political prisoners in the Urals. But the works of this great Russian poet like the works of other talented writers will outlive their creator, so many people and generations will be able to understand Russian history and enjoy the beauty of poetry.

Один из выдающихся современных украинских писателей Василий Стус родился недалеко от Киева, но провел свое детство и юность в Донбасском регионе. В этой части Украины люди говорят на русском языке и странно, что молодой поэт смог сохранить свой родной язык.

Он окончил местный педагогический институт и некоторое время работал учителем украинского языка и литературы. Когда в 1963 г. он решил продолжить свое образование, он уехал в Киев, где изучал теорию литературы. Так были опубликованы его первые сборники поэзии «Коловорот», «Зимние деревья» и «Веселое кладбище».

В своей поэзии и публичных выступлениях Стус всегда протестовал против репрессий украинской интеллигенции. Период 1961-1965 гг. был временем «политической оттепели», но все же Стус был исключен из аспирантуры, и в 1972 г. его арестовали, обвинили в антисоветской пропаганде и приговорили к 5 годам тюрьмы и 3 года ссылки. Но Василий Стус не прекратил писать, и такие работы, написанные в тюрьме, как «Свеча в зеркале»: «Палимпсесты», критики считают вершиной его творческого наследия. Эти поэмы о жизни и смерти, судьбу, личный выбор и ответственность.

Когда в 1979 г. Василий Стус вернулся в Киев, он снова был заключен в тюрьму на 10 лет и получил 5 лет ссылки. Его здоровье не могло выдержать неволи, и в возрасте 49 лет он умер в лагере для политических заключенных на Урале. Но работы этого великого украинского поэта, как и работы других талантливых писателей, переживут своего создателя, чтобы много людей и поколений могли понять историю Украины и насладиться красок поэзии.
