UKRAINE. GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION
We know that Ukraine is a sovereign state, its independence was proclaimed in 1991. Ukraine is situated in the east of Europe. The territory of Ukraine is 603,700 square kilometres. Our country borders on Russia, Byelorus, Poland, Moldova, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania. It is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and has very important ports. Ukraine is larger than France and Great Britain but considerably smaller than Russia. 5 % of the territory is mountainous, the rest part of the Russian area is flat. The Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains are the most famous in Ukraine. The Carpathians are the only mountainous natural boundary of Ukraine. They are covered with mixed forests of pine, fir, beech and oak trees. There are the thickest forests in Volyn, which are part of the famous Byelovezhskaya Pushcha.
The Dnieper is the main river of the country, moreover, it is the third longest river in Europe. Such rivers as the Dniester, the Bug, the Donets are also important.
The population of our country is about 48 million people. Besides the Ukrainians representatives of many other nationalities live there: Russians, Jews, Byelorusians, Moldovians, Romanians, Greeks, Tatars, Poles, Armenians, Germans, Gypsies and some other ethnic minorities. That is why Ukraine has a very rich and varied culture and history.
The biggest cities of Ukraine are Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhya, Donetsk, Odesa, Mykolaiv and some others.
It is a well-known fact that Ukraine is a highly developed industrial and agricultural country. It is rich in iron ore, coal, natural gas, oil salt and other mineral resources. Ukraine also has a big metallurgical, machine-building, fuel and power base, it produces chemical and agricultural raw materials.
Scientists of Ukraine make their contributions of important discoveries and inventions to the world science. The Academy of Science of Ukraine presented many outstanding scientists and research workers to the country. They created new improved machines and mechanisms. Such branches of science as biology, medicine and nuclear physics are not left without attention.
As it is already mentioned Ukraine has a rich history and cultural heritage. There are many higher educational establishments, professional theatres, public libraries, state museums, art galleries in Ukraine. It is also famous for many outstanding writers, poets and singers.
It is very important to mention that Ukraine is a member of the United Nation Organisation and of course takes part in the work of many international organisations.

Мы знаем, что Украина - это суверенное государство, ее независимость была провозглашена в 1991 г. Украина расположена на востоке Европы. Территория Украины - 603 700 квадратных километров. Наша страна граничит с Россией, Беларусью, Польшей, Молдовой, Словакией, Венгрией, Румынией. Она омывается Черным и Азовским морями и имеет очень важные порты. Украина больше за Францию и Великобританию, но значительно меньше за Россию. Пять процентов территории - гористые, другая часть - равнинная. Карпатские и Крымские горы самые известные в Украине. Карпатские горы - единственный естественный горный границу Украины. Они покрыты смешанными лесами из сосен, елей, буков и дубов. На Волыни находится самый густой лес, который является частью знаменитой Беловежской пущи.
Днепр - самая большая река страны, более того, это третья самая длинная река в Европе. Такие реки, как Днестр, Буг, Донец, тоже важны.
Населения нашей страны около 48 млн. человек. Кроме украинцев, представители многих других национальностей здесь живут: русские, евреи, белорусы, молдаване, румыны, греки, татары, поляки, армяне, немцы, цыгане и некоторые другие этнические меньшинства. Поэтому украинская культура и история такая богатая и разнообразная.
Крупнейшие города Украины - Киев, Харьков, Львов, Днепропетровск, Запорожье, Донецк, Одесса, Николаев и некоторые другие.
Всем известно, что Украина - высокоразвитая промышленная и сельскохозяйственная страна. Она богата на железную руду, уголь, природный газ, нефть, соль и другие минеральные ресурсы. В Украине также есть большая металлургическая, машиностроительная, топливная и энергетическая база, она производит химические и сельскохозяйственные материалы.
Ученые Украины делают свой вклад в виде важных открытий и изобретений в мировую науку. Академия наук Украины подготовила много выдающихся ученых и исследователей стране. Они создали новые, улучшенные машины и механизмы. Такие отрасли науки, как биология, медицина и атомная физика, тоже не оставлены без внимания.
Как уже было упомянуто, Украина имеет богатую историю и культурное наследие. В Украине много высших учебных заведений, профессиональных театров, общественных библиотек, государственных музеев, художественных галерей. Украина также знаменита многими выдающимися писателями, поэтами и исполнителями.
Очень важно вспомнить, что Украина является членом Организации Объединенных Наций и, конечно же, участвует в работе многих международных организаций.
