Khmelnytskyi is situated in the Western Ukraine at the confluence of the Buh and its tributary the Ploska.

According to the chronicles, Khmelnytskyi was founded in 1493 and was named Ploskyriv.

Until 1954 it was called Proskuriv, and then it was renamed to honour hetman B. Khmelnytskyi.

The total area of the city is 52 km2. Its population is 241 000.
